On April 30, 2016, a bold idea took root within Colorado’s Ugandan diaspora — to create a platform that would connect, inform, and uplift a growing community far from home. Ten years later, the UUACO Media Center stands as a testament to that vision — an enduring bridge linking Colorado Ugandans and friends of Colorado Ugandans through storytelling, communication, and shared identity.

As the United Ugandans Association of Colorado (UUACO) media center marks this milestone, the 10-year anniversary is more than a celebration of longevity, it is a recognition of impact. Over the past decade, the Media Center has played a central role in shaping how the community interacts, organizes, and preserves its cultural footprint in Colorado.

Reflecting on the journey, founder Mr. Charles B. Lwanga emphasized the original mission and its lasting significance. “When we started the UUACO Media Center in 2016, the goal was simple but powerful, to give our community a voice and a platform to stay connected. Ten years later, it’s incredible to see how that vision has grown into something that truly unites and empowers Ugandans across Colorado.”

From covering community events and highlighting individual achievements to amplifying important discussions around politics, entertainment, sports, culture, leadership, and development, the Media Center has consistently served as the voice of the Colorado Ugandans diaspora. Through the community magazine, website and social media handles, it has documented journeys, strengthened networks, and provided a platform where stories that might otherwise go unheard are brought to light.

For many within the community, its impact is deeply personal. One member, who preferred to remain anonymous, described the Media Center as more than just a communication tool. “The Media Center has been more than just communication, it’s been a lifeline. It keeps us informed, brings us together, and reminds us that no matter how far we are from home, we are still one community.”

Today, the media center is proud to annouce its upcoming anniversary celebration, scheduled for Saturday, June 13, 2026, at Piney Creek Hollow Park in Aurora. This reflects the spirit that has sustained the Media Center for a decade, connection, collaboration, and community pride. Set as an outdoor BBQ gathering from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., the event also invites attendees to not only commemorate the past but to actively shape the future.

"This celebration also carries forward-looking significance. It will serve as the official precursor to the Colorado Ugandan Community Summer Picnic, set for August 8, 2026, one of the most anticipated annual gatherings for Ugandans in the Rocky Mountain region. In this sense, the anniversary is both a reflection and a launchpad, linking a decade of achievement with new opportunities for engagement.", says one of the organizers.

A key highlight of the event will be the presence of Ms. Ahemigisha, President of UUACO, who will attend as the guest of honor. Her participation underscores the importance of the Media Center within the broader organizational mission of UUACO. During the celebration, she will officially launch the fundraising drive for the summer picnic, signaling a renewed commitment to sustaining vibrant community traditions.

According to the organizers, the symbolism of “10 Years of Community, 10 Years of Connection, 10 Years of Growth” is not merely a slogan, it is a lived experience. UUACO has been at the forefront of creating a sense of belonging for Ugandans navigating life in Colorado. And, connection has been fostered through media platforms that bring people together across distances and differences. Also, growth has been evident in the expanding reach, influence, and sophistication of the Media Center’s work.

For many young Ugandans growing up in Colorado, UUACO Media Center has served as a cultural anchor, helping Colorado Ugandans understand their heritage while engaging confidently with their American environment. For older generations, it has been a familiar thread connecting them to home, tradition, and one another.

"Events like the upcoming anniversary BBQ are essential in translating digital connection into real-life relationships. They provide a space where conversations move beyond phone screens, where laughter is shared over meals and where new friendships are also formed alongside long-standing bonds. In many ways, these gatherings embody the very purpose for which the Media Center was created", says Mr. Lwanga.

Looking ahead, the next decade presents both opportunities and challenges. As technology evolves and community needs shift and the UUACO Media Center will be called upon to innovate while staying grounded in its founding principles. According to the founder, expanding its reach, deepening its storytelling, and fostering even stronger engagement will be critical to maintaining its relevance and impact.

Built on dedication, volunteerism, and a shared sense of purpose, the Media Center has demonstrated resilience and adaptability. It has proven that when a community invests in its own voice, it can shape its narrative and strengthen its collective future. And, as June 13 approaches, the invitation is clear, come celebrate, reconnect, and be part of the next chapter. Whether you have been part of the journey since 2016 or are newly joining the community, this milestone belongs to everyone. Ten years on, the UUACO Media Center is not just marking time, it is celebrating a legacy in motion.
